From two Kolkata counters to a retail OS we operate

MaterialOS is Scopelyt's live SaaS for Indian retailers with staff and multiple shops. One system for stock, sales, purchases, udhaar, GST invoices, and 14 reports on every phone. Built and run by the same pod that ships client work.

01Situation

MaterialOS started as the operating system for a family-run building materials supplier in Kolkata: two shops, daily counter sales, and udhaar that could not wait until month-end. That pattern shows up across India. Paper registers and single-user phone apps work until staff join, a second shop opens, or the owner needs stock, sales, and customer credit in one place without calling someone at the other counter. Low stock surfaces at billing time. Udhaar sits in notebooks, WhatsApp, and memory. Vyapar fits one person on one phone. Tally lives on a desktop. Teams with staff on multiple phones needed something else.

02Ambiguity

The hard part was not an inventory screen. It was drawing a day-one boundary for a shop OS: stock truth, sales, purchases, suppliers, udhaar, GST invoices, and multi-shop reporting, without drifting into a generic ERP. We also had to lock rules that only show up under real use: what staff can see (purchase cost hidden from billing staff), when owner approval fires (below-margin sales, credit over limit), FIFO payment allocation instead of manual khata fixes, and which capabilities sit on Growth and Pro (per-customer pricing, expense tracking, approval workflows). Vague boundaries would have meant rework once shopkeepers ran day-one ops.

03Scope lock

In scope

  • Stock, sales, and purchases as one operational loop
  • Customer credit (udhaar) with per-customer limits; staff blocked when a sale would exceed limit
  • Supplier tracking, GST invoices, and 14 day-to-day reports
  • Multi-shop stock, sales, and udhaar from any phone; owner can roll up or filter by shop
  • Five staff roles with invite flow so each person sees only what they need
  • Margin floor: staff bill without seeing purchase cost; below-margin sales need owner approval on Growth and Pro
  • FIFO payment allocation so collections match open invoices and customer khata stays clean
  • Per-customer pricing, expense tracking, and approval workflows on Growth and Pro tiers
  • Android counter app with Bluetooth thermal print (58mm/80mm) plus A4/A5 tax invoices in browser
  • Public product site with Starter / Growth / Pro pricing and a 30-day Pro trial (no card at signup)

Out of scope

  • Full desktop accounting replacement (Tally parity for chartered accountants)
  • GST return filing or e-invoice filing (invoices and reports yes; filing no)
  • Permanent free tier (trial only; data stays readable after trial, new sales and purchases pause until a plan is chosen)
  • Single-person-only billing tools that ignore staff roles and multi-shop ops
  • Custom one-off builds per shop instead of a product Scopelyt operates

04Shipped

  • Live product at materialos.in with Starter (1 shop, 3 staff), Growth (3 shops, 8 staff), and Pro (unlimited shops and staff) plans
  • Core retail workflows: stock, sales, purchases, udhaar, GST invoicing, and 14 reports
  • Five roles, margin and credit approval flows, FIFO collections, and tier-gated per-customer pricing
  • 30-day Pro trial with every feature unlocked and no credit card; after trial, read-only access until subscription via Razorpay on web
  • Android app for counter billing and Bluetooth thermal printing; A4/A5 invoices from browser
  • Vertical-ready positioning for building materials, kirana, pharmacy, and electronics retailers

05Result

MaterialOS is live at materialos.in. Retailers can read pricing, start a Pro trial, and run counter-to-close workflows from phones without a sales call. For Scopelyt clients, it is proof we ship and operate software we stand behind: public billing, trial gating that pauses writes but keeps data readable, and the same clarity-before-code scope discipline we bring to client builds. We do not publish retailer adoption numbers; evaluate the product in the open.
